Match Report

Ryan Hall’s early goal was in vein as Moors were dumped out of the Emirates FA Cup on a disappointing night in Chester.

Spennymoor, boasting three changes from the side that began the 1-1 draw at Alfreton, made a lively start and deservedly led after just six minutes in an eerily quiet Swansway Chester Stadium.

Rob Ramshaw was the architect, driving down the left hand side and fizzing a low cross which was converted from three yards out by Ryan Hall.

It was Hall’s first goal since a 2-2 draw at Leamington in December 2019 and gave Moors the perfect platform to build on.

The goal sparked a sense of urgency into the home side, and they went close when a John Johnston free-kick clipped the top of the net, however, Dale Eve was confident it was causing no immediate problems.

Moors were given a warning sign when a long ball over the top from Declan Weeks found the pacey Danny Elliott, but his goal bound touch was cleared off the line, but, Chester would soon find an equaliser.

Brad Jackson was given too much time on the left flank, resulting in a low shot which Eve could only parry into the path of the bombarding full back Jamie Morgan who finished from close range.

The game swayed from left to right in the following ten minutes, with the action also heating up on the touchline following a disagreement between Magnay and Chester boss Anthony Johnson.

Declan Weeks came close to giving Chester the lead five minutes before the interval with a fearsome long range effort, but his shot evaded Eve’s right hand post.

A subdued second half burst into life when Eve collided with Elliott in the penalty area following a through ball, with the referee adjudging that the Chester striker got to the ball first.

Elliott picked himself up and, following a stuttered run-up, sent Eve the wrong way to put the Blues in charge.

That goal promoted Ainsley to make two alterations, with the duo of Mark Anderson and Stephen Thompson replacing Jason Kennedy and the impressive Hall.

The double change had a positive impact as Moors began to apply pressure and sustain long spells of possession in front of a retreating Chester defence.

Taylor found himself in acres of space from a corner but saw his header deflect wide, before Thompson’s fierce drive also hit a Chester body.

That spell of pressure proved to be in vain as Chester put the tie out of Moors’ reach ten minutes from the full time whistle, and it was George Waring, who had just been introduced from the bench, who connected with a corner to score with his first touch of the ball.

Only a smart reaction save from Louis Gray denied Taylor from a free-kick before Thompson fired over the bar in the area, but, it was not meant to be as Moors exited the cup at the expense of the Blues.
